Cette rencontre réunit Eleni Riga, curatrice et lauréate du programme de résidence Institut français x Cité internationale des arts et Vincent d’Eaubonne, fils de Françoise d’Eaubonne, dégoupilleur de matrimoine auteur et co-rédacteur du site francoise-d-eaubonne.org. Ensemble, ils exploreront l’héritage intellectuel et sensible de l’écrivaine et militante qui a forgé le terme écoféminisme.

Vincent d’Eaubonne ouvrira la rencontre en évoquant l’aspect plus intime de l’œuvre: ses dessins, sa formation aux Beaux-Arts et la façon dont son engagement se prolongeait dans une lecture pionnière de l’histoire de l’art.

Eleni Riga, avec une pratique curatoriale écofeministe en méditerranée, présentera ensuite les premières pistes de sa recherche autour du renouveau d’intérêt pour l’écoféminisme en France, ainsi que ses manifestations au sein des pratiques artistiques et curatoriales contemporaines. Elle partagera également ses découvertes préliminaires sur les liens entre Françoise d’Eaubonne et les artistes et commissaires féministes de son époque.

This event brings together Eleni Riga, curator and laureate of the residency program Institut français x Cité internationale des arts, and Vincent d’Eaubonne, son of Françoise d’Eaubonne, a catalyst for discussions on maternal heritage, author and co-editor of the website francoise-d-eaubonne.org. Together, they will explore the intellectual and affective legacy of the writer and activist who coined the term ecofeminism. 

Vincent d’Eaubonne will open this event by speaking about the more intimate aspects of her work: her drawings, her training at the Beaux-Arts, and the ways in which her political engagement extended into a pioneering reading of art history.

Eleni Riga, whose curatorial practice is ecofeminist and rooted in the Mediterranean, will then present the first directions of her research on the renewed interest in ecofeminism in France, as well as its expressions within contemporary artistic and curatorial practices. She will also share her initial findings on the connections between Françoise d’Eaubonne and the feminist artists and curators of her time.

Depuis près de 60 ans, la Cité internationale des arts à Paris accueille des artistes du monde entier. Lors de cette résidence, artistes, écrivain(e)s et créateur(ice)s sont amené(e)s à rencontrer leurs publics et des professionnels, dans le cadre culturel effervescent parisien.

En 2025, l’Institut français de Grèce s’associe au programme des résidences de l’Institut français de Paris et vous présente Eleni Riga, commissaire grecque sélectionnée pour une résidence de trois mois à partir d’octobre 2025.

Le parcours d’Eleni Riga

Eleni Riga est une commissaire indépendante et chercheuse basée à Athènes, dont la pratique explore les liens entre féminisme et écologie. Elle a travaillé au Département de l’Education du MoMA à New York, dirigé le département d’art contemporain d’Eleusis 2023 – Capitale Européenne de la Culture et a été assistante commissaire pour documenta 14 à Athènes et Cassel.

En tant que commissaire indépendante, elle a collaboré avec la Kunsthalle Friart (Fribourg, Suisse), BO (Oslo, Norvège) et, depuis 2022, elle dirige l’Office of Hydrocommons, un programme curatorial sur les politiques de l’eau et du corps, en partenariat avec la fondation ATOPOS cvc et de nombreux acteurs grecs et internationaux. Elle collabore également avec Callirrhoë (Athènes) comme liaison entre artistes, institutions et collections.

Diplômée en Communication, Médias et Culture de l’Université Panteion (Athènes), du master Sciences et Techniques de l’Exposition de l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et du programme Curatorlab de Konstfack – Université des arts, de l’artisanat et du design (Stockholm), elle a participé à plusieurs résidences, parmi lesquelles GENERATOR- 40mcube (Rennes), Onassis AiR (Athènes), la Fondation G. & A. Mamidakis (Agios Nikolaos, Crete) ainsi qu’ARCAthens (New York–Athènes).

Le projet d’Eleni Riga à la Cité internationale des Arts

Dans le cadre de sa résidence à la Cité des Arts, Eleni Riga mène une recherche consacrée à l’art écoféministe. Elle s’appuie sur l’ouvrage fondateur Féminisme ou la Mort de Françoise d’Eaubonne, qui introduisit pour la première fois le terme « écoféminisme » en 1974 et posa les bases conceptuelles du lien entre écologie et féminisme. La première traduction complète en anglais, publiée en 2020 au cœur de la pandémie de COVID-19 et de la crise du care, a suscité un regain d’intérêt international pour la pensée écoféministe et souligné sa pertinence dans les contextes contemporains. Cette période a également vu une résurgence des pratiques écoféministes dans les arts, ainsi qu’une recontextualisation de pratiques historiques, illustrée par de grandes expositions au Royaume-Uni et aux États-Unis.

La recherche d’Eleni Riga se concentre sur des artistes basés en France, afin de revisiter certaines pratiques historiques tout en observant de nouvelles approches écoféministes. En combinant enquêtes de terrain (live research) et travail d’archives, elle contribue à prolonger le dialogue entre pratiques écoféministes historiques et contemporaines, en particulier dans le contexte méditerranéen.

For nearly 60 years, the Cité internationale des arts in Paris has welcomed artists from around the world. During this residency, artists, writers, and creators are invited to meet the public and professionals within Paris’s vibrant cultural landscape.

In 2025, the French Institute of Greece joins the residency program of the Institut français in Paris and presents Eleni Riga, the Greek curator selected for a three-month residency beginning in October 2025.

Eleni Riga’s Background

Eleni Riga is an independent curator and researcher based in Athens whose practice explores the intersections between feminism and ecology. She has worked in the Education Department of MoMA in New York, led the contemporary art department of Eleusis 2023 – European Capital of Culture, and served as assistant curator for documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel.

As an independent curator, she has collaborated with Kunsthalle Friart (Fribourg, Switzerland), BO (Oslo, Norway), and since 2022 has directed the Office of Hydrocommons, a curatorial program dedicated to the politics of water and the body, in collaboration with the ATOPOS cvc foundation and numerous Greek and international partners. She also works with Callirrhoë (Athens) as a liaison between artists, institutions, and collections.

She holds a degree in Communication, Media, and Culture from Panteion University (Athens), a Master’s in Exhibition Sciences and Techniques from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and is an alumna of the Curatorlab program at Konstfack – University of Arts, Crafts, and Design (Stockholm). She has participated in several residency programs, including GENERATOR–40mcube (Rennes), Onassis AiR (Athens), the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation (Agios Nikolaos, Crete), and ARCAthens (New York–Athens).

Eleni Riga’s Project at the Cité internationale des arts

During her residency at the Cité des Arts, Eleni Riga is pursuing research dedicated to ecofeminist art. Her project draws on Françoise d’Eaubonne’s seminal book Le féminisme ou la mort, which first introduced the term “ecofeminism” in 1974 and laid the conceptual groundwork for linking ecology and feminism. The first complete English translation, published in 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the care crisis, sparked renewed international interest in ecofeminist thought and highlighted its relevance in contemporary contexts. This period also saw a resurgence of ecofeminist artistic practices and a recontextualization of historical ones, as reflected in major exhibitions in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Riga’s research focuses on artists based in France, revisiting historical practices while also examining new ecofeminist approaches. Combining fieldwork (live research) with archival studies, she contributes to extending the dialogue between historical and contemporary ecofeminist practices, particularly within the Mediterranean context.
